The story of one of the greatest sports events of the 20th century, the heavyweight championship boput between Germany's Max Schmeling and America's "Brown Bomber", Joe Louis held in front of some 70,000 spectators at Yankee Stadium June 22, 1938. For Louis, it was a chance to avenge the only loss in his career--two years earlier to Schmeling. With the Second World War threatening, however, the fight was perceived as a contest between nations, races, and political ideologies---the symbol of a vaster struggle. The author not only brecreates the drama of the but but also traces the lives of the two combatants before and after the fight, including Schmeling's efforts in Nazi Germany to protect Jewish friends, and the the boxers' surprising friendship in the post-war years.
