About This Item

1881 INCREDIBLE Rime of Ancient Mariner Samuel Taylor Coleridge DORÉ Art FOLIO

"The Rime of the Ancient Mariner" is a masterwork by the prominent English poet, Samuel Taylor Coleridge accompanied by the magnificent artwork of the incredibly talented, Gustave Doré with 39 engraved plates. The poem recounts a mariner's grim voyage and his compulsion to share his experience with a wedding guest. His fatal error of killing a guiding albatross brings supernatural retribution, resulting in a series of misfortunes for the ship and crew, culminating in death, guilt, and penance. The poem is rich in themes like nature's splendor, the supernatural, redemption, and the efficacy of prayer, ultimately underscoring the necessity of respecting all life. Serving as a pivotal work at the close of the 18th century, this poem helped mark the beginnings of a transition from the Romantic to the Modern period in English poetry.

This rare folio edition combines the talents of both Coleridge and Doré to form an incredible work of art and poetry.

Synopsis

SAMUEL TAYLOR COLERIDGE (1772-1834), one of the most imaginative poets of the English Romantic Movement, was also its most influential thinker and philosopher. The Rime of the Ancient Mariner was written early in his life, during a period of intense and impassioned creativity, and, like all his best work, has a visionary quality with strong religious and metaphysical overtones.   MERVYN PEAKE (1911-1968) was born in China but moved to England at the age of eleven and studied at Eltham College, Kent, and at the Royal Academy Schools. His striking originality as an artist brought him renown as an illustrator of books such as Alice in Wonderland, The Hunting of the Snark and Treasure Island . He also wrote poetry and plays, but is best remembered as a writer for his Gormenghast trilogy of novels , Titus Groan, Gormenghast and Titus Alone , an extravagant gothic fantasy that has become a modern classic.
