About This Item

New York: Thomas Y. Crowell Company [1957], 1957. First edition. Hardcover. Near Fine/Very Good. 8vo. [8], ix-xiii, [1], 1-332, [4] pp. Red cloth with a few black stars on the front board, black lettering and two black stars on the spine. Price of $3.75 on the front flap of the dust jacket. Jacket done by Peter Burchard. Baumgarten 118. A pleasing copy of this Newbery Award-winner, a moving tale of a Union soldier's experiences in Kansas and Oklahoma during the U.S. Civil War. While completing research for his master's thesis, Keith stumbled across little-known history concerning the Western campaign in the Civil War. He spent time interviewing 22 Civil War veterans, and those conversations informed much of this novel. A small closed tear to the front panel with a tape ghost on the reverse.
