About This Item

Indianapolis, IN: Bobbs-Merrill Company, 1940 Bobbs-Merrill Company, Indianapolis, IN. c1940. Hardcover. Later Printing. Book is tight, square, and unmarked but for a small gift inscription on the FFFP verso dated 1940. Book Condition: Good +; light shelfwear to head, tail, tips, board top and bottom edges, and spine shoulders; light bumping to tips. No DJ. Blue cloth boards and spine with bright gilt lettering on the spine and front board. Maps as endpapers. Tinted textblock top. 433 pp 8vo. Richard was a prolific letter writer to his parents during all of his travels. His letters were long and full; sometimes just brief jottings, and sometime long letters written bit by bit throughout the day. Following his death sailing the Sea Dragon his parents debated over what to do with the letters that were a complete record of his life. Written with no thought of publication, they account for nearly every week of his career, from the day he entered Princeton in 1917 until the day he set sail in the ill-fated Sea Dragon. A clean very presentable copy.
