About This Item

London: Blackie & Son, Ltd, 1907. First edition. Hardcover. g to vg. Oblong quarto (9 x 11 1/2"). Original olive cloth pictorially stamped in green, black, orange and gilt, with gold lettering to spine and black lettering to front cover. Pictorial endpapers. Title in red and black lettering within illustrated frame.

Published in 1907, "The Rhyme of a Run and Other Verse" is Florence Harrison's second work after "Rhymes and Reasons," which she published in 1905.

The ten short stories written in verse are accompanied with a total of 21 pasted color illustrations, 5 in-text and 10 full-page woodcuts, of which all are in a striking Art Nouveau style.

Moderate shelf wear. Front corners slightly frayed and bumped (not affecting pages). Head and tail of spine slightly rubbed. Closed tear, and minor chipping to the sixth color plate. Closed tear and slight creasing to upper margin of the following (seventh) color plate. Pages slightly age-toned along margin.

Binding in good to good+, interior in good to very good condition.

About the author: Florence Harrison (1877-1955) was an Art Nouveau and Pre-Raphaelite illustrator of poetry and children's books. Many of her books were published by Blackie and Sons. She illustrated books by notable Pre-Raphaelite circle poets Christina Rossetti, William Morris and Sir Alfred Tennyson.
