About This Item

Leicester: Leicester University Press, 1967. Hardcover. Good/Good- (soiling to boards along top edge, overall shelfwear to boards. Dust jacket has heavy wear and tears.). White boards with gilt illustration on front cover, gilt spine lettering; white dust jacket, color illustration on front, bw illustration on rear, black lettering; top edge red tinted; color mounted frontispiece; 169 pp, 170 bw illustrations throughout. "many of the foxes are shown in the 170 photographs in this book. The text, in relating the illustrations to the literary evidence, recounts many of the medieval fables which tell the story of Reynard with a delightful and appealing rustic humour- simple, direct and often bawdy. Reynard's encounters with Chantecler the Cock, Tibert the Cat, Bruin the Bear and Isengrin the Wolf are all described, and so are his disguies as mistrel, monk, pilgrim and priest. For would-be huntsmen Dr. Varty provides good advice from medieval hunting manuals, and he also includes a selection of anecdotes about behaviour of Reynard's twentieth-century descendants." - dust jacket.
