New York: Harper & Brothers, 1929. Hardcover. Original contents in fine condition with just a hint of tanning to the paper, new binding and slipcase in pristine condition. Photographs upon request. Number 780 of a limited eiditon of 1500 copies, of which five hundred copies are reserved for England, autographed by the illustrator, 484pp., 12 tippped-in woodcuts with numerous textual illustrations. This copy has been rebound in full buff coloured leather with maroon leather label to the spine with gilt titling, maroon silk moire endpapers and sewn-in ribbon marker, housed in a paper-covered professionally made slipcase in colours to match.

Synopsis

The Return of the Native is Thomas Hardy's sixth published novel. It first appeared in the serial Belgravia, a publication known for its sensationalism, and was presented in twelve monthly installments from January to December of 1878. Due to the novel's controversial themes, Hardy had some difficulty finding a publisher; reviews, however, though somewhat mixed, were generally positive. In the twentieth century, The Return of the Native became one of Hardy's most popular novels.
