Professor Waterhouse of Washington University, St. Louis, wrote this book for the State Board of Immigration in order to attract settlers. The attractions include education, commerce, railroads, homesteading on agricultural land, liberty, and St. Louis, "commercial center of North America." 8.5" x 5.75" The final 32 pages of this book are display-type ads for: Rich Farms and Good Homes; North Missouri Railroad; Stock Raising; Fruit Growing; Pacific Railroad (of Missouri); Timberland; Mississippi Valley Transportation Company; Hardware; Household Products; Dry Goods & Notions; Carriages; &c. Both sides of the rear cover are devoted to Washington University. (Seventeen years later, Prof. Waterhouse addressed the First National Convention of American Cattlemen at St. Louis.) [Decker 47:167.].
