New York: UPI, 1970 Very Good [Republic of New Afrika] Wire Photo of Rafael Viera New York: United Press International/Newspaper Enterprise Association, October 30, 1970 Wire photo, 205 by 253 cm Very good with agency stamps on verso Viera was a member of the Republic of New Afrika (RNA) that advocated for the creation of an independent African-American-majority country within the United States He was charged, tried and acquitted of murdering a policeman in 1969 during the first New Afrikan Nation Day Celebration at the New Bethel Baptist Church, on the West Side of Detroit The caption reads: 10/30/70 DETROIT: Rafael Viera, 22, co-defendant in the New Bethel trial with Clarence J Fuller, who was stabbed to death 10/26, said 10/29 at a news conference that two recent attempts had been made on his life Viera and Fuller were charged in the rifle shooting 3/29/69 of two Detroit policemen, Michael Czapski, who was killed, and Richard Worobec, who was wounded, outside of Detroits New Bethel Baptist Church Both Viera and Fuller were acquitted of the charges 6/15/70 Viera said 10/29 that gunmen had shot at him on a New York City street and again in his New York apartment $4500 <br/><br/>
