About This Item
Melbourne: John Ferres Government printer, 1857. First printing. Paperback. Very good. A fantastic foreign look at the new American railway system with an aim to set up a Victorian rail system based on the most relevent information from the states. An Australian government "Blue Paper" on the U.S. railway system. At the time Australia was divided into separate states and each was looking to set up the best system for themselves. The paper gives a great overview of the operations of the American railroads by an independent observer.
Galton was a captain in the Royal Engineers and Secretary to the Railway department and Board of Trade. He made the report under the auspices of the Lords of the Committee of Privy Council for Trade and Foreign Plantations. Sml. folio, 23pp, title on front page, stitch bound. A couple of very faint fox spots o/w a very nice copy, very tight & clean.
