About This Item

This First Edition copy of the Report of the Committee on Banking and Currency, together with hearings thereof, on Bill H.R. 8149, Fifty-third Congress, third session, 1894 was published in Washington, DC in 1894 by the Government Printing Office. The book, which measures approximately 5 ¾ inches wide by 9 inches tall by ¾ inches thick, contains 385 pages of text relating to the work of the Committee in their study of and recommendation for the proposed new law affecting National Banking Associations. Pages 1to10 of the book contains the conclusions of the Committee (the majority of committee members). The Views of the Minority are on pages 11to14. The balance of the book, e.g., pages 1 to 371 (pages have been renumbered for this section), is titled The National Currency and Banking System – Notes of Hearings before the Committee on Banking and Currency of the House of Representatives.

The report's conclusion, stated on page 1 of the document, is "The Committee on Banking and Currency, to which was referred the bill (H. R. 8149) to amend the laws relative to national banking associations, to exempt the notes of said banks from taxation upon certain conditions, and for other purposes, having had the same under consideration, report the same back with the recommendation that it pass."

The book is string bound with paper covers. The pages have minimal tanning; the text is clear and easily read. There is some staining on the lower edge of the pages and on the outer edges of several pages where there was exposure to the outside environment because of defects in the paper covers. The paper covers show dirt marks on front and rear and some tearing and chipping along the edges. The overall condition of the book is good/very good.

The illustrations accompanying this description show the Front Cover, the first page of text (view of the majority), first page of Views of the Minority, the first page of The National Currency and Banking System, and a typical two-page spread of committee discussions.
