Including his Speeches in the United States Congress on the Indian question, as Representative and Senator of Georgia; his Official Correspondence on the Removal of the Cherokees During his Two Terms as Governor of Georgia, and Later as United States Commissioner to the Cherokees, 1827-1841 together with a Sketch of his Life and Conduct while holding many Public Offices under the Government of Georgia and the United States, prior to 1827, and after 1841. NY: Dodd, Mead & Co, 1907. 1st ed. 2 vols. 369; 328 pp., frontis. In orig. cloth. Corners of vol. 2 are a trifle bumped else a very bright set in near fine condition. Howes L-567. Limited to 500 copies. There were other copies issued in a later binding from original sheet, but they lack the frontispieces. This is from the original issue in publisher's cloth. Larwood, Georgia, series 10, p. 227: "[Lumpkin] was a Congressman from Georgia (1827-1831), governor of Georgia (1831-1835), and in 1835 was appointed by President Andrew Jackson the first United States Commissioner under the Cherokee Treaty. For a period of ten years he was thus continuously and intimately concerned with the `Indian Question' and the removal of the Cherokees.
