The men who prepared to defend the Alamo on Feb. 1836 had no thought of making history--a few Davy Crockett, Jim Bowie, and Buck Travis were already famous; t he rest were unknown volunteers. Less than 200 men defended the garrison against the hundreds of trained Mexican soldiers in Santa Anna's army.
