About This Item

Glasgow: Duncan Mackenzie, Printer, 1806. Paperback. Poor/None. Our photos depict the actual book offered. Original booklet, reduced to pages now, barely held together by former owner's 2 pieces of blue tape. Toned and chipped edges. A few penciled instances of marginalia, mostly punctuation. Interior is unmarked. 12.5 x 19.5 cm. Ships from US. BOOK INFO: 'Being a paper, subscribed and given in to the Associated Session, Havannah-street, Glasgow, by some members of that congregation.' 'In laying the following declaration before the public, we are well aware, that, in general, it will meet with neglect, contempt, and ridicule; yea, we doubt not, but some, whom it ought more especially to excite to cautious enquiry, will convert it into fuel for feeding their rancorous spirit, will thereby be emboldened to more violent opposition, and become more assiduous in inventing and disseminating calumnious reproaches. From the treatment, however, which we have already received, the publication we consider necessary for our own vindication. While we were yet beholding, with alarm, the Secession church entering into that cloud of thick darkness in which she is now completely enveloped, the multitude, in the mean time, gropping [sic] like blind men, yet exclaiming, light, light! New and surprising light--While we could have no intimate fellowship with her, without invoving ourselves in apostacy and perjury, but waited in the skirts of her Assemblies, as it were afar off, to see what the end of these things would be, questions were often propounded with the most vociferous declamation, some of which may find their answer in the following pages. We were then, on a certain occasion, told that the New Testimony was the best, the fullest, and the faithfullest, ever given to the world by any Church, and that all future generations would rise up and call the compilers blessed--The panegyrist at the same time informing us, that he could say a great deal more, were it necessary or convenient.' (-from the Preface).
