About This Item

NY: Knopf, 1976. First edition. Hardcover. Near fine/Near fine. Second printing. Inscribed at length, filling the front free endpaper: "For George Hanson, Herewith is my Credo, a crystallization of my faith and belief after a lifetime of exploring the wilderness regions of the continent. I know my thoughts will echo many of your own. Warmest regards, sincerely, Sigurd F. Olson, 3/16/76, Ely." Uncommon signed, especially with this depth of expression. George Hanson was a college librarian and book collector in Chicago, with a special passion for Iceland, and a copy of his obituary is laid in. Illustrated by Leslie (Les) Kouba. Essay on wilderness and wild things in three sections: "Primal Heritage," "Search for Meaning," and "The Imponderables."

Green paper boards with gilt stamping and a gray cloth spine. Near fine with a minor pull to the top the front free endpaper at rear and slightest bumping and sunning to to lower board edges. In a near fine jacket with a touch of wear to corner and spine ends. A spectacular inscription from one of our foremost environmental writers.

About Rural Hours

Rural Hours (formerly Wood + River = Books, est. 2019) specializes in ecology, natural history, nature writing, the environment, environmental literature, and contemporary essay, with a special passion for association copies and notable inscriptions. We draw our name from the popular-but-then-forgotten book by Susan Fenimore Cooper (published in 1850), generally considered the first work of environmental creative nonfiction by a woman in the U.S. We are interested in challenging and expanding the canon of environmental literature and finding books that tell remarkable stories and illuminate the tradition of writing about place and natural history.
