About This Item
New York: Viking, 2014. First Printing [Stated]. Hardcover. Very good/Good. John-Patrick Thomas. [10], 310 pages. Illustrations. Index. Inscription on title page is signed by both authors. DJ has some wear and soiling. David Boies (born March 11, 1941) is an American lawyer and chairman of the law firm Boies, Schiller & Flexner. He has been involved in high-profile cases in the United States, including United States v. Microsoft Corp., Bush v. Gore, Hollingsworth v. Perry, and the defense of Harvey Weinstein. Theodore Bevry Olson (born September 11, 1940) is an American lawyer who served as United States Solicitor General under President George W. Bush. In 2009, he joined together with President Clinton's former attorney David Boies to bring a lawsuit, Perry v. Schwarzenegger, challenging Proposition 8, a California state constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage. His work on the lawsuit earned him a place among the Time 100's greatest thinkers. In 2011, Olson and David Boies were awarded the ABA Medal, the highest award of the American Bar Association. Derived from a Kirkus review: The two principal attorneys who joined forces in 2009 to fight California's Proposition 8, which outlawed gay marriage, wrote this account of their adventures in court. Although much of the text is in the third person, on two occasions, the authors pause to let an individual have a chapter. Both men have "Why I Took the Case" chapters. The authors address their federal lawsuit, the appeal and the Supreme Court appearance that resulted in a partial victory for the authors' side. The authors help us see what a massive undertaking this suit was and give us some details about how many lawyers were involved and what they were doing. Boies and Olson do disdain the "expert" witnesses the pro-Prop 8 team assembled.
