About This Item

London: Anthony Blond, 1958. Tall octavo, red hardback, spine embossed with bronze lettering, 192 pp., frontispiece, seven black-and-white plates. Spine ends bumped, foxing on edges of text block, foxing on first and last few pages; otherwise a very good copy. First edition. A compelling account of the harrowing wartime experiences of Jo Capka, a Czechoslovakian who fought with the Royal Air Force during World War Two. Originally a captain in the Czech Air Force, Capka became a pilot for RAF Bomber Squadron No. 311, and carried out 52 dramatic bombing raids. On his return to Czechoslovakia, he was sentenced to ten years hard labour due to his involvement in the war. Capka returned to England after his release in 1957. Here he relates his moving story to Kendall McDonald, who admirably captures the complexity and emotion of this brave man's experiences.
