About This Item

London: Dean & Son Ltd.. Good+ with no dust jacket. 1903. Presumed First UK Edition. Paperback. Rare little gift booklet with lovely chromolithographic covers, in the original coloured pictorial postal wrappers, stamped and dated Dec 23. '03 ( possibly? ). The postmark is very smudged - but the other booklet I have for sale from the same recipient was dated Dec '04 and a gift at Christmas once a year seems reasonable. Produced as a Toy Gift book and this copy was addressed to a young girl in Penrith, Cumberland. Inside the covers the booklet has a letter format for the sender to write a gift message, and serrated edges for the recipient to open the book. This booklet is from 'Maggie' to 'Ruthie' with a Christmas wishes message on the letter sections. The book itself has chromolithographic pictorial covers and 8 b/w (or dark blue/white) illustrated printed pages, including covers, and full colour double page image in the centre. The Artist is NW. (? ). One central staple, rusted, but not badly. No inscriptions or major marks in the book itself, but the whole booklet is a little wrinkled/lightly creased. This is, however, not todays' more sanitised storyline, but the earlier version of Red Riding Hood where the Wolf gets killed! Overall, considering it's age, generally Good Plus to Very Good. Pretty Scarce. A lovely period survivor of another era. Turn of the Century Ephemera. SEE IMAGES. ; Dean's Pickaninny Series; Oblong 16mo 6.25" x 3.5" .
