Quarto, black hardcover, spine embossed with gilt lettering, 288 pp., endpapers illustrated with maps, frontispiece, illustrated throughout with numerous black-and-white photographs, some maps included, 17 appendices included. Top spine end bumped, light foxing on edges of text block, spine ends of dust-jacket worn and torn; overall a near-fine copy in a very good dust-jacket. First edition. A detailed account of the conflict between the Soviet Air Force and the German Luftwaffe during World War Two. Caught unprepared by the German invasion in 1941, the Soviet Air Force was nearly annihilated, yet by 1943 it gained the initiative over the Luftwaffe. At the end of war, the Force had grown to become the largest tactical air force in the world.
