About This Item
London: Smith, Elder & Company. Good+. 1873. First British Edition. Hardcover. 281 p. 18 cm. Sound and square binding in green, cloth-covered boards, with bevelled edges. Rear hinge has a crack and has possibly been glued, and is holding firmly. Wear to the spine ends, and less so to the corners. Gilt spine titles darkened. Inside pages have occasional soil and are lightly tanned. The last few leaves are still together along the top edge, obviously the edge being missed in trimming. A poem in blank verse, which tells a story of sexual intrigue, religious obsession and violent death in contemporary Paris and Normandy, closely based on the true story of the death, supposedly by suicide, of the jewellery heir Antoine Mellerio (from Wikipedia). .
