"When comparing the modern conditions of sport with those enjoyed by our ancestors there are many differences which at once suggest themselves. Since the hunting of birds and beasts dates back to prehistoric times it is difficult to select a date from which to start comparisons but, as my object is to record the largest bags of the individual species of Game made in a day, I may conveniently take the early days of the nineteenth century." - from the Introduction. .
