Embossed & decorated plum-coloured publisher’s cloth (some foxing & toning to endpapers, minor shelfwear, some sunning to spine, slight fraying head of spine), still VG- copy, w/ former ownership signature on ffep. First edition of this collection of speeches by the famed abolitionist senator which includes his famed and bitter speech “The Crime against Kansas,” which resulted in the brutal caning by Rep. Preston Brooks from South Carolina, and injuries which took years to heal. The event inflamed the Northern abolitionist movement against the South and was a contributory event towards Civil War.
