Boston: Higgins and Bradley, 1856. Hardcover. Very Good. First edition. Octavo. viii, 697pp., illustrated with an engraved frontispiece plate (portrait of Sumner). Contemporary owner's name in ink on front fly leaf (dated 1856), and small later owner's bookplate on front pastedown. Publisher's brown cloth with a decorative design stamped in blind on both covers, gilt lettering on spine, light cream endpapers. Laid in, presumably by the original owners, are a few contemporary newspaper clippings and one four-page holograph letter. Gilt spine lettering a little tarnished, endleaves lightly toned, very good. A well-preserved copy with a lively contemporary letter laid in.
