A "Complimentary Copy" slip from the publisher tipped in on the front paste down. In this critical study of Frank Norris, Stephen Crane, Jack London, Ellen Glasgow and Thoedore Dreiser, Maxwell Geismar covers the years of ferment between 1890 and 1915, a period of changing trends and attitudes and of intellectual liberation as illustrated in the works and lives of these five authors.
