About This Item

London: T.Fisher Unwin, 1907. Although an American, Dodge (1869-1931) was born in Syria. Like Burton, he was a Fellow of a the Royal Geographic Society. First published in June, 1907. This is a Very Good (Plus) copy of a later printing, in an unusual "Edition for America Imported by A. Wessels Company." Penzer (p. 323) thought highly of this work. Dark gray cloth binding. The front cover has Greek ruling and features Sir Richard, in gilt, riding a camel. Clean text; 240 pages; indexed. Top-edge is gilt, others rough-cut. The coloured frontis illustration is a cartoon of Burton from "Vanity Fair" magazine. Previous-owner signature (1974) on the FFEP. Corners are lightly bumped, some rub to the margins. Wear to the head and foot of the spine, with two small tears resulting at the top. The gilt on the top edge is darkened, but all titling and Sir Richard and his camel remain nicely bright. A very solid and attractive copy. In an archival plastic protector.. Later Printing. Hard Cover. Very Good (Plus)/No Jacket. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
