About This Item
Garden City, New York: Doubleday, Doran & Company, Inc, 1933. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good/Very good. Presentation copy, inscribed and dated in the year of publication, with an original drawing, by the author to writer and Los Angeles Times literary editor Paul Jordan-Smith on the half-title: "For Paul Jordan-Smith who broke out the bottle of Old Priory for which I was truly thankful, Thorne Smith". Jordan-Smith's bookplate appears on the front pastedown. The inebriated adventures of a cuckold husband, his three partners in a big-city department store, and a salesgirl from the pornographic books department. This is Smith's most openly erotic novel, with many direct suggestions of sexual encounters, accompanied by cartoons of nude women cavorting with the protagonists, drawn by artist Herbert Roese. Octavo. Original rose cloth binding, with gilt stamping. Small ink notation to the front pastedown. Some light fading along the spine. The dust jacket is price-clipped, with a bit of general shelfwear; otherwise very good.
