Forty-one full page paintings reproduced in seven-color offset were done by J. Fenwick Lansdowne also includes a chapter on fossil species by Storrs L. Olson, 406 pages. Maroon cloth spine with black title block, gilt rule, titles in gilt, natural linen boards, tan endpapers with brown rail tracks. A comprehensive treatment of the 129 known species of rails, with taxonomic keys, descriptions, life histories, courting behavior, distrubution and status of hundreds of sub-species. The book also includes an unusual section of photographs of these elusive birds, maps throughout show distrubtion. Book comes housed in the plain cardboard slipcase as issued. Dust jacket has tiny bit of wear at base of spine panel otherwise fine.
