Denver: The University of Denver Press, 1951. Hardcover. 8vo. Pale grey cloth with dark grey lettering. xiii, 242pp. Very good. Quite minor binding wear only, else tight and internally near fine; endpapers a tad age toned as usual. First edition, a tight and attractive copy. Choice presentation inscription from the author in bold black ink filling the front endpaper: "To Governor / Adlai E. Stevenson / State of Illinois / Compliments & Best Wishes / of the Author. / Wayne C. Williams / Denver, Colo. / Aug 1 -- 1952." Amusingly, the first-time Democratic presidential candidate, who rarely marked in his books at all, pencils a simple checkmark alongside "Campaign Preliminaries" on the table of contents, the title of the first chapter. Also interesting is that Williams actually inscribed a second copy of this title to Stevenson around this same time and made encouraging remarks about his presidential aspirations. From the library of Adlai E. Stevenson III (1930-2021), U.S. senator from Illinois (1969-81) and before him of his father (1900-65), Adlai E. Stevenson II (1900-65), Illinois governor and twice presidential candidate.

Much old charm here, first sheets have a mild shadowing perhaps an inpexpensive clipping was in here. Text is unmarked but not without bit of smudge fore edge. Boards unbumped, trace tip abrasion. Jacket price clipped, worn, soiled appearance, discolored, should look decent for it's foto in new mylar wrapper. SPECIAL NOTE: We acquired this and many other Lincoln items recently.
