Jacket faintly age toned, with most minor of edgewear. Exceptionally tight and bright first edition of these (to cite front jacket panel) "Critical Essays on Nine Metaphysical Poets and Novelists" by this influential academic and literary critic (1899-1986), who boldly signs the front flyleaf in blue ink. Front pastedown bears the undergraduate ownership signature ("Cornell College / 1948") of Frank S. Hanlin (1924-82, bibliographer and University of Iowa special collections director). All-around outstanding copy, featuring essays on Edward Taylor, George Herbert, Alexander Pope, Gerard Manley Hopkins, William Butler Yeats, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Franz Kafka, E.M. Forster and Henry James.
