155-314 pages with facsimile, figures, appendix and index. Quarto (10 1/2" x 8") bound in original publisher's wrappers. Latin text with English Translation by Graydon Wendell Regenos. Middle American Research Institute number 11. Philological and Documentary Studies, Volume 1, number 5. First edition. Rafael Landivar, was a poet and Jesuit priest Guatemala. He was a descendant of the conquistador Bernal Diaz del Castillo and therefore his parents were wealthy nobles. He began his academic training at eleven in the College of San Borja , in the city of his birth, and at the same time was in training as Seminary Jesuit . In 1744 he enrolled in the Royal and Pontifical University of San Carlos Borromeo. He was conferred the degree of bachelor in philosophy in 1746, when he still not quite fifteen. Just over a year later, in May 1747, he earned degrees in philosophy and a master degree. In 1749 he moved to Mexico to enter the religious order of the Society of Jesus and was ordained priest in 1755. On his return to Guatemala, he served as rector of the Colegio San Borja. During the exile of the expulsion of the Jesuits, he completed and published the Rusticatio Mexicana" a Latin poem of over 5000 hexameters. Condition: Soiled, Anthropology of MIAC stamp on front wrapper, corners bumped else a very good copy.
