About This Item
New York: Henry holt, 1996. First edition. Hardcover. Fine/fine. First edition (stated), first printing. Fine in fine dust jacket. Hardcover. 291 pp. The first in this series of medieval mysteries featuring Justin de Quincy, a "Queen's man" working for Eleanor of Aquitaine. The year is 1193 and Eleanor of Aquitaine sits on the throne of England. She has outlived her husband King Henry II and her son and the rightful heir Richard Lionheart is missing in the Holy Land. Justin de Quincy is the bastard-born son of a high ranking cleric who never acknowledged him, providing him only with an education. He comes to Eleanor's notice and becomes a "Queen's man" and tracks a brutal murderer in Winchester while also uncovering sinister intrigues in the Queen's court. Penman (d. 2021) was a master of historical fiction and her Queen's Man series of mysteries ran to five books. Fine, tight copy in crisp dust jacket.
