Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1956 8vo (24.5 cm), VIII, 229 pp. Publisher's cloth and dust jacket (dj chipped at the head of the spine, small stains bottom of few first pages, ownership entry on the title page). First edition, second printing. Sir Rudolf Ernst Peierls (1907-1995) was a German-born British physicist who played a major role in the Britain's nuclear weapon programme, as well as the subsequent Manhattan Project. The book develops the subject from the basic principle of quantum mechanics. The treatment covers the electron theory of metals as well as the dynamics of crystals, including the author's work on the thermal conductivity of crystals.
