About This Item

London: The Swarthmore Press Ltd. ,. Very Good- in Fair dust jacket. 1923. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good, Clean and Bright leaf-green boards with clear deep black titling and borders to the spine. A small 'closed' ( 1 cm ) repaired tear to the foot of the rear of the spine. In the original publisher's dustjacket. The dustjacket's base colour is 'buff'- a light brown - and is lettered in red (not a good combination) and the lettering to the spine is very faint, (the spine is 'sunned' = lightly browned by exposure to light) but is very clear to the front and rear covers and inner flap. The dustjacket is chipped and torn, with small losses, to the top edge and to the bottom of the spine and corners, all of which are now as neatly repaired as is possible to the reverse of the d/j with clear archive tape, and the d/j is now in a new protective clear - removable - bookfilm plastic cover and looks better, and is near 100% complete. See Images. The page fore-edges are lightly tanned with age and have some foxing (light yellowy-brown spotting) , and internally there is some light offsetting to the plain cream endpapers and a few light scattered foxing spots to the prelims. NO Inscriptions or other marks. 560 pp. Contents cover : - Introductory - The Christian Churches and Peace; The Seventeenth Century; The Ground of the Peace treaty; The Eighteenth Century; The Nineteenth Century; Friends Abroad - the West Indies, The American colonies, Pennsylvania, The War of Independence, The United States, Friends in Europe; Conclusion - The Twentieth Century. 6 Appendices. Index. "For nearly 300 years the Society of Friends has held that War is inconsistent with Christianity. This historical study shows how far Friends have maintained their peace "testimony" in face of actual war. It tells of their sufferings for this belief in many countries, of their work to relieve the victims of war, and of the seventy years of unarmed government in Pennsylvania. The book draws largely from Manuscript records, and is the first complete study of the subject. It ends with the year 1920." . Quite scarce in this original form in the original d/j. See Images; 8vo 8" - 9" tall .
