About This Item

New York: Simon and Schuster, 1961. Stated first printing. Small 8vo hardcover. 8-1/4" x 5-1/4". Yellow textured paper covered boards. Illustrated endpapers. Previous owner's name at top of free front endpaper, otherwise book is in fine condition./Dust jacket with a few very tiny nicks and tears, overall very good to fine.. Ghoulishly witty illustrations by Edward Gorey: one (and sometimes two) to each poem.. Paul Dehn's hair-raising parodies of familiar verses are a stinging effort to confront mankind with the idiocy of its course toward self-destruction. He has taken the songs of our former innocence and readjusted each one to show how far we have departed from the spirit of the original. The result would be terrifying if it were not so funny - and funny if it were not so terrifying.
