The country they conquered was a profoundly troubled one, and they lost no time in employing their consummate ability to take in hand the economy and administration of China. The Manchu emperors took a personal interest in the porcelain industry, encouraging initiative, but often also imposing their own tastes. Under the reign of Kangxi (1662-1722), an extraordinarily pure, bright sapphire blue made from local cobalt oxides replaced the famous 'Mohammedan blue', with purplish reflections, of the Ming period. Chinese porcelain painters produced wonderful effects with this new color, using it either as a wash or in bold brush strokes. Their prodigious skills enabled them to execute a whole range of subjects in subtle shades of blue: scenes of court and family life, imperial audiences, episodes taken from celebrated novels, familiar landscapes, different species of flora and fauna.--pg. 8.
