Quarto. 25.5 cm. xxx,[2],575 pp. Early gift inscription on front fly-leaf to "Walter John Mc Dowall | The gift of his affectionate Father on entering the 6th class. 1843." School prize binding (Harvard College, 1915), with bookplate on front pastedown. Red straight-grain morocco, gilt-stamped spine with black lettering piece, triple borders and armorial seal on sides, marbled endpapers, a.e.g. The binding, once quite elegant but now rather worn looking, has darkened on spine and shows general light soiling all over, with superficial edgewear and rubbing on joints. Lettering piece is chipped at one corner with loss of type. Text is clean and nicely printed on quality paper. Very good.
