About This Item
Sydney: HarperCollins, 2003. 1st ed.. Paperback octavo, very good condition, black & white photos, pages lightly toned, top corner tip front cover creased, minor edgewear, remainder stripe. 322 pp. A biography about the Peter Singer's grandfather, David Ernst Oppenheim (1881-1943). This is a very personal and hauntingly universal story. The author tells the story through the prism of letters and assorted papers that he discovered in a relative's apartment in Melbourne. He made startling discoveries about his grandparents' early romantic attachments, the basis on which they decide to marry, their professional aspirations, and their differing views on Judaism. His grandfather worked with both both Sigmund Freud and Alfred Adler. His grandfather died in a Jewish ghetto in Czechoslovakia in 1943. (He did not know he would later have a grandson, who became the noted philosopher Peter Singer.).
