About This Item
1st Edition. Small 4to, illustrated boards, cloth spine. 132 pp. A humorous account of the "Follies", the London theatrical phenomenon that was a blend of Vaudeville and the Folies Bergere. " Songs, Dance, Reciatations…" "With a New Song by H.G. Pelissier." b/w photos and illustrations by Geoffrey Holme and others. Pasted to the front end paper is a letterhead for the Follies, with manuscript note signed by H.G. Pelissier, the song writer and eventual producer. " Dear Mr. Lloyd, / I have now taken over the above company -- performers in period costume -- Do you think we should do any good at Hull? If so about what time of year & who is the right man to writemto who would be likely to "run" us --Hoping you will excuse my bothering you. /s Pellisier. H.G. Pellisier was an English theatrical producer, composer, and satirist. He presented a number of theatrical productions during the Edwardian era, including 'The Follies'. J.C. Lloyd operated Lloyd's Opera House, in Ellensburg, Scotland, torn down in 1953 to make way for a parking lot. Lloyd's bookplate is mounted to the front pastedown. Below that, in ink, is an inscription by J.Turbotton Armstrong "I knew Pelissier, Gardner and Lloyd well." Armstrong was a British electrical engineer and inventor. Together with the Swedish engineer Axel Orling, he invented a patented method for controlling torpedoes as well as a system for telephony and distance signaling without wire, and improvements in the operation of electric railways. A rather unusual piece.
