Andover: Warren F. Draper, 1879 Hardcover, 12mo, in brown cloth with gilt titles, 232 pp., plus seven pages advertisements. Arranged by subject, the book has numerous proverbs from England, Scotland, Wales as well as the Continent, with notes translated from the original Latin, Italian, French and German. An example of the type: " A house wi' a reek and a wife wi' a reerd [scolding noise] will sune mak a man run to the door.--Scotch." Words to live by indeed. The author, Walter Keating Kelly, (died London 1867) wrote books on other topics; Indo-European folklore, a history of Russia, a translation of Cervantes, as well as the erotic poetry of Catullus and Tibullus and the Virgil of Venus. Condition: Good: Hinges starting. Rubbing to edges of boards, top edge of text block dusty. Mild foxing to end papers only. Rare edition. . Hardcover . Good.
