About This Item
London: Edward Arnold, 1966. Book. Very Good. Cloth. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. xvii, 222pp., index, notes. Previous owner's name inside front. VG in lightly scuffed and discloured DJ. "This study breaks away from the kind of 'literary' method to which the Brontës have been particularly subjected and which begins with biography, then searches the works for 'clues', only to return in the end to biography. Interest is here focused on the Brontës as novelists; and as novelists who were, for all the uniqueness of their personal situation, part of a social and literary scene where it was assumed that woman occupies a sphere 'distinct and separate' from man's, and that women should write in terms of 'Their Proper Sphere'.".
