About This Item
Soft cover. Very Good. A leftist-leaning periodical in continual publication since it was launched in 1909 as La Follette's Weekly, changing to La Follette's for a few years, & then, in 1929, to The Progressive. This sample of issues provides a time capsule into the politics of the era, when trust in the American government was beginning to erode & increasing numbers of young people were taking to the street in protest to voice their concerns about the Vietnam War. Articles address issues that are paralleled by concerns that still plague the country in the 21st century, including resistance to American involvement overseas, "hostage-taking" in the persons of POWs used as "political pawns,'' the continuing struggle for a national health insurance, racial relations, American Indians & other people of color as "alien Americans,'' oil & environmental exploitation, the failure of public schools, decline of inner cities, cinematic violence & movies' impact on the morals of youth, corporate intrusion into government, climate control, censorship, welfare reform, regulating telecommunications, etc. Each issue is a 4to (8.5" x 1"), approximately 50+ pages, stapled binding, colorful wrappers, some with former owner's mailing label to back cover. Condition on 20 issues is Near Fine-Fine, as flawless as when first issued. Five of the remaining issues are VG (a hint of rubbing, dogeared outer-upper corner, spine roll, staple rusting). One issue is Poor because the front cover is ripped & wrappers are tearing away from staples. One issue is Good: flawless, but a coupon was neatly excised from back cover. Our photos depict the exact book you will receive, never "stock" images of books we don't actually have! Same day shipping on all orders received by 2 pm Weekdays (Pacific time); later orders, Weekends, & holidays ship very next business day.
