About This Item

New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1968. First Edition. Near Fine/Near Fine. First edition. Signed by Richard Hofstadter on front free endpaper, inscribed to sociologist Daniel Bell "with love always from the depths of the unprogressive. [signed] Dick" dated in the year of publication, Oct. 20, 1968. A few marginal brackets in red ink (presumably by Bell), else Fine in an unclipped dust jacket with a hint of toning, else Fine. xvii, [1], 498, [2], xiii, [5] pp. Original gray cloth with gilt and crimson stamping, red topstain.

A nice association between two major American intellectuals of the 20th century. Hofstadter is most often remembered to day for his warnings against "the paranoid style in American politics"; Bell was Left-wing intellectual who became a neoconservative prophet of the post-industrial.
