About This Item
London: Smith, Elder & Co, 1857. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good. Octavos. Tasteful later rebindings in finely-pebbled brown cloth with the titles gilt (attributing authorship to Brontë) on the spine, top-edges gilt. The true first edition, with the 16 pages of advertisements dated June, 1857 at the rear of Volume 2, and the 2-page advert for Mrs. Gaskell's "Life of Charlotte Brontë" (the second edition — the "memoir" would go into a third edition before the end of 1857, such was the public's curiosity regarding the elusive Bell/Brontë family) at the rear of Volume 1. A bright, clean set.
