About This Item

London: Collins, 1961. First edition. Leather. Near Fine. 9.5" by 6". None. A beautifully bound biography of Churchill's scientific advisor., Frederick Lindemann. The first edition of this work, in a delightful full morocco signed binding, stamped 'R. W. & H. B. 1969'. With numerous photographic plates throughout.A biography of Frederick Alexander Lindemann, 1st Viscount Cherwell, a British physicist who was prime scientific adviser to Winston Churchill in World War II. His abiding influence on Churchill stemmed from close personal friendship, as a member of the latter's country-house set, including Evelyn Waugh, the Mitfords and the Sitwells. In Churchill's second government, he was given a seat in the cabinet, and later created Viscount Cherwell of Oxford. This is the work of Frederick Winston Furneaux Smith, 2nd Earl of Birkenhead, a British biographer and Member of the House of Lords. He is best known for writing a biography of Rudyard Kipling that was suppressed by the Kipling family for many years, and which he never lived to see in print. In a full morocco signed binding, with gilt detailing. Externally, lovely. Internally, firmly bound. Light discolouration to title page, and the odd spot throughout. Near Fine
