About This Item
New York: Harper & Brothers, 1895. First Edition. Hardcover. Good. Octavo; 336, [iv] pages, decorated green cloth, left tips of spine worn, free endpaper lacks a thumbnail-size chip at lower right corner.
"'Masterly in the precision of its phrase, its characterization, and its humor, WITH THE PROCESSION, in my judgment ranks with Howell's A MODERN INSTANCE, and SILAS LAPHAM. Cosmopolitan in its technique, it made all other stories of Chicago seem raw and crude.... Social Chicago of the nineties lies in these pages, more perfectly preserved than in any other story then or since - Hamilin Garland, as quoted p. 87-88 of CHICAGO IN STORY." State A of the rear ads [BAL 6466] with Thomas Hardy at the head of page [339], priority uncertain.

About Thomas J. Joyce And Company
Joyce And Company has been in business as a professional rare bookseller and appraiser since 1975. Owner Thomas Joyce was the regular book appraiser on Home & Garden TV\'s \"The Appraisal Fair\\\" program, on international broadcasts. Thomas Joyce was the co-discoverer of George Washington's personal copy of William Leybourn's 1679 edition of THE COMPLEAT SURVEYOR, from which young Washington learned some of his surveying skills at age 16. The book had vanished for nearly a century until its re-discovery in 2017. It is now back at Mt. Vernon.
