Contemporary full calf with seven spine compartments between raised bands. Leather labels in second and third compartments with gilt-tooled title "Cases in Equity Abridg" and volume number. In lower half of title page: "by Charles Ingersoll." No publication information. Charles Ingersoll (1805-1882) was the son of Charles Jared Ingersoll (1782-1862), both lawyers in Philadelphia. Charles Ingersoll was the author of several other publications on legal matters. Although opposed by the author of this publication, whether Charles Ingersoll or another, the joint resolution led to an amendment of the Pennsylvania constitution in 1850 introducing the elective judiciary to the state. In the upper right-hand corner of the title page is the partially cropped signature of Craig Biddle (1823-1910), who was a member of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives in 1850 and later a judge. Forgeries provides a scholarly, yet lively and interesting look at the forgery of books, documents and manuscripts throughout history. 8½ x 5½". 37. Original printed tan wrappers with side stitched thread binding. 40 pp. Wraps soiled, one inch closed tear and "C" inked to front wrap. Pages toned with neat penciled annotations of a critical and academic tone throughout. Quite scarce first printing in good or better condition, none in orig. binding found in commerce at this time. OCLC suggests this edition held in European libraries, but none in North America.

Printing error: 737 and 738 were skipped in pagination (no text is lacking). Bookplate on back fixed endpaper indicating that this was presented to the Washington County Historical Society by Janet M. Clark in 1905. A heavy book; for international shipping, it will have to be sent by priority international. In Good Condition: leather is rubbed; joints are cracked; minor loss at ends of spine; blank leaf preceding title page has one horizontal tear from the fore-edge almost to the gutter; occasional foxing, generally light; otherwise, clean and solid.
