Blind tooled original cloth, VG+, 211pp+4pp publishers adverts, spine a little faded & a small amount of wear at the head of the spine with slight loss, occasional foxing to the page margins, 2 1860s related newspaper clippings tipped in on the endpapers, ownership signature of Gulian Crommelin Verplanck on the pastedow. A nice copy. Study of the effect of a fall in the value of gold on other commodity prices where gold is used to set the standard of value. The author, Michel Chevalier [ 1806 - 1879 ] french economist & free market liberal is best know for his co-authoring, with Richard Cobden, the so called 'Cobden - Chevalier' treaty of 1860 which saw a relaxation of trade restrictions & tariffs between Britain and France. Gulian Crommelin Verplanck [ 1786 - 1870 ], New York senator & politician, also noted for his literary involvement with the 'Knickerbocker Group'.

Rebacked with original backstrip laid down, minimal pencil marginalia. 211, [4] pp. Translated from the French with a new preface by Richard Cobden. Michel Chevalier was a French engineer, statesman, economist and free market liberal whose 1837 work Des interets materiels en France earned him influence and a position as professor of political economy at the College de France. Together with Richard Cobden and John Bright he prepared the free trade agreement of 1860 between the United Kingdom and France, which is still called the Cobden-Chevalier Treaty.
