First American edition of this collection of 3 novellas written by Henry James (1843-1916) at the height of his popularity. BAL binding variant "C" (no priority established): blue cloth with spine and front cover stamped in gold and silver; no stain on top edge; endpapers are white laid paper. Association copy: on the front free endpaper is the signature of the noted Henry James scholar, Elsa M. Nettles. In her 30 years on the faculty of the College of William and Mary, Nettels was honored by the Phi Beta Kappa Society's Faculty Award for the Advancement of Scholarship and College's most prestigious award, The Thomas Ashley Graves, Jr. Award for Sustained Excellence in Teaching. The book is in very good+ condition: clean, bright, and tight, with just a hint of edgewear and just a hint of toning of pages.. First U. S. Edition. Hard Cover.
