Christie, Manson & Woods International Inc, New York, auction catalogue for the sale held on 9th June 2004. Laminated illustrated wrappers, 4to,. 179 pp, colour ills. Lots 233-435. The sale comprised: Civil War material - lots 233-348; Manuscript and Printed Americana, various properties - 349-435. From the introduction - "The Civil War remains the pivotal event in American history. ..The following extensive trove of letters presents the war in all its aspects. The collection was amassed largely by an industrious private collector between 1945 and 1965 with the invaluable guidance of the legendary Ralph G. Newman, founder of Chicago's Abraham Lincoln Bookshop. It contains several important Lincoln letters, including confidential correspondence between the President and General Grant in the days leading up to Lee's surrender. There are vivid accounts of combat from officers and men, as well as a large number of rare war-date letters from top Confederate leaders and commanders such as Jefferson Davis, Robert E. Lee, Stonewall Jackson, George Pickett, and J.E.B. Stuart. Near Fine.
