(Volumes 1 and 3 being Very Good, and 2 being Good due to a shallow stain at the top edge margin of later pages, barely visible on the gilt.) Identified as from the Author's Edition of The Synthetic Philosophy of Herbert Spencer, limited to one thousand copies, but with no individual set volume numbers, and no listing of the volumes in the complete set. No date for this edition, but believed c.1900.

PON inside front cover, pencil marginalia scattered throughout both volumes. Tight overall, showing light edge and corner wear more prevalent at head/foot of spine. Some very minor rubbing/discoloration of boards. Pages edges tanned, pages evenly yellowed. A solid pair. .

Both vols in half-black stippled cloth and black panneled spine leather, this being the lib. binding of the 'United University Club', this being a London club for Oxford and Cambridge University members (500 from each), the gilt club logo being on centre front Vol.1; both covers are generally clean and secure but Vol.1 has rubbing to both joints, split to bottom front joint and chip across bottom half bottom spine panel,plus fairly extensive rubbin to outer corners, Vol.2 again clean and secure but more extensive rubbing, with surface loss to all corners and top front corner to leather beside spine, gilt club logo to bottom spine. Marbled end-papers with all gutter incipiently cracking, front one Vol.1 somewhat worse. Both text-blocks firm and clean bar a few odd spots, light edge tanning throughout. London: Williams and Norgate, 1876. Cloth. Very Good. A tight, well-preserved example of the 1876 1st edition of this landmark in 19th century sociology, complete in 3 volumes. All 3 octavo volumes clean and VG in their russet cloth, with gilt-lettering to the spines and elaborate blindstamping to the panels. Fading --and very light soiling-- along the spines, forgivable soiling to the pastedowns and endsheets. Still though, solid and very presentable.
